With the sharply rising incidence of obesity in the United States has come an increase in the number of bariatric procedures being performed: from 13,365 in 1998 to more than 200,000 in 2007. The primary care provider with patients who have undergone a gastric bypass must be alert to their potential for significant, even serious, postsurgical vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
