Diastolic Heart Failure

Author and Disclosure Information

Heart failure affects nearly 5.8 million people in the United States, with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction in one-third to one-half of patients. Early detection of “diastolic heart failure,” prudent evaluation of underlying causes and comorbidities, management of fluid status, and patient education are benchmarks of treatment. With early, appropriate intervention, the primary care provider can play an important role in altering outcomes for these patients.
