Rhinosinusitis in Adults: Who Needs Antibiotics?

Rhinosinusitis is the fifth most common condition for which antibiotics are prescribed in the United States—yet the overuse of these drugs to treat a condition that is usually viral in etiology is well documented. Using an evidence-based approach, this article will discuss cost-effective strategies to determine which patients are candidates for antibiotic therapy and identify agents that have been found most effective. Supportive therapies to relieve symptoms are also discussed.
