A Retrospective Study of Serum Vitamin D Levels in Veterans

Dr. Maloney is the interim director and Dr. Jensen is a project principal investigator and staff psychiatrist, both in the Rehabilitation Medicine Service at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury, North Carolina. Dr. Buckler is chief, Business Service, at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System in Reno, Nevada. Dr. Gil-Rivas is an associate professor and Dr. Goolkasian is a professor in the Department of Psychology, both at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.
Vitamin D deficiency is commonly associated with bone disease, such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Recently, however, vitamin D also has been identified as a hormone that is vital for healthy immune functioning.
