The number of older adults in the United States is expected to increase from almost 38.9 million in 2008 to 63.5 million by 2025.(1) In the past 2 decades, measures to reduce health care costs have led to reductions in hospitalizations and lengths of stay and an increasing demand on nursing homes (NHs) to provide care for an aging population with complex medical conditions.
