Patients with esophageal cancer must be carefully evaluated to determine whether radiation therapy can improve disease outcomes along with chemotherapy, according to Olubunmi Abayomi, MD, of the Washington DC VAMC.

“Preoperative radiation therapy by itself is no longer employed in treating esophageal cancer,” Dr. Abayomi said. “The overall survival is often superior for chemoradiation as opposed to radiation alone.”
