These examples of associated medical conditions and comorbidities can be viewed as some of the hidden consequences of epilepsy and seizures. These conditions are often overlooked in the management of patients with epilepsy, in part because these are not always recognized or visible. Sometimes one associated comorbid condition can have a greater impact because of the patient’s age. For instance, memory loss may be more worrisome for a college student, compared with an elderly person with epilepsy.
Physicians should include periodic questioning and screening for these symptoms as part of follow-up visits and consultations for epilepsy patients. Cognitive or mood changes do not necessarily occur at a particular time in the treatment course. Treatment regimens may need to be adjusted on a case-by-case basis if these associated conditions occur. Referral for treatment of a mood disorder is recommended.
