In 2011, the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse reported an estimated 25.8 million Americans with diabetes, which accounted for an estimated $174 billion spent in total health care costs that year.1 At the Oklahoma City Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Oklahoma, about 33% of the patient population is known to have diabetes with the majority of these patients having type 2 diabetes.
