Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that affects 25.8 million Americans or 8.3% of the U.S. population.(1) According to the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet, an estimated 27% of Americans aged ≥ 65 years have been diagnosed with diabetes, and nearly 50% have prediabetes.(1) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate 1 of 3 American adults could have diabetes by 2050.1 Due to its long-term complications and increased cardiovascular risk, diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of mortality in the U.S.(1)
