For Residents

Skin Cancer Screenings: What Is Our Role as Dermatology Residents?

Skin cancer screenings are an important and effective way to reach out to patients as well as to provide education about skin cancer and skin cancer prevention. Residents are frequently asked to volunteer at skin cancer screenings. Dr. Brooke Walls discusses the role of residents at a screening event, with a focus on education, prevention, and detection. She also provides tips she gives to patients on sun-protective measures. Residents should seize the opportunity to educate and provide patients with a positive experience so they will not feel intimidated having their skin examined in the future. It also is important to provide patients with the tools to help identify suspicious lesions to prevent and protect themselves from the harmful effects of the sun.
