Monocytosis Prevalence in Polycythemia Vera Evaluated

The prevalence of monocytosis in people with polycythemia vera was higher than anticipated in a study involving 267 individuals. Additionally, the mutation profile and age distribution of such patients was found to be similar to that which is seen in those with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.

Investigators looked at the prevalence, laboratory and molecular correlates, and prognostic significance of monocytosis in participants with PV. Among the results:

Patients with monocytosis were older and more prone to leukocytosis and TET2/SRSF2 mutations.
After adjusting for certain variables, patients with a higher absolute monocyte count had poorer overall survival.
Unfavorable karyotype, older age, and higher white blood cell count also played a role in overall survival.
