Repeated ANA Testing After Negative Result of Little Diagnostic Value

Key clinical point: Repeated antinuclear antibody testing after a negative result has limited use for the diagnosis of ANA-associated rheumatologic conditions.

Major finding: With repeated testing, the results of 79% of ANA tests did not change, and the positive predictive value was very low at 0.01.

Study details: A retrospective, multicenter analysis of more than 36,000 ANA tests performed during a 7-year period (2011-2018) in Australia.
