Health care costs nearly doubled for patients with NAFLD

Key clinical point: The health care costs of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease were nearly twice that of matched population controls.

Major finding: Annual hospitalizations averaged 0.27 times among patients with NAFLD vs. 0.16 times among controls matched by age, sex, and region (P less than .001), for an annual incremental cost of $635.

Study details: Retrospective study of 646 patients with biopsy-confirmed NAFLD and 6,460 matched population controls.
