Consider hyperbaric oxygen for inflammatory ileal pouchitis

Key clinical point: Consider a course of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in inflammatory bowel disease patients with an ileal pouch–anal anastomosis and medically refractory inflammatory pouchitis.

Major finding: Among 21 patients, 19 experienced improvement in their modified Pouchitis Disease Activity Index (mPDAI) score in response to hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Study details: This retrospective case series included 21 consecutive adults with a history of ileal pouch–anal anastomosis and medically refractory inflammatory pouchitis who underwent a course of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
