HPV Vaccination Campaign Attracts College Students

J Obstet Gynaecol Can; ePub 2017 Oct 25; Piedimonte, et al

HPV vaccination rates can increase with the help of educational efforts aimed at university students, according to a recent study. Details include:

  • Among 56 students who filled out questionnaires testing their knowledge of HPV and cervical cancer, 63% were convinced they weren’t at risk for HPV infection but 88% said they knew HPV causes the cancer.
  • The 3 main reasons students had not taken the vaccine in the past: financial barriers, no access to a provider, or they didn’t believe they were at high risk.
  • In the second phase of the experiment, researchers expanded their reach with social media, email, information booths, and individual solicitation.
  • Among 151 students who were reached, 64 were vaccinated on site and there were 18 walk-ins.
