HRQOL Following Minor Ischemic Events

Predicting impairment at 3 months

Predictors of impaired health-related quality of life (HRQOL) include age, index stroke severity, and recurrent stroke, according to a study of 332 patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor ischemic stroke (MIS). Patients had a mean age of 65.7 years and were 52.4% male. Researchers found:

• 14.2% of patients had recurrent stroke within 90 days and 12.3% were disabled at 3 months.

• Any HRQOL impairment was seen in 35.8% of patients.

• In multivariate analysis, age (OR, 1.02), initial NIH Stroke Scale score (OR, 1.39), recurrent stroke (OR, 2.10), and proxy reporting (OR, 3.94) were independent predictors of impaired HRQOL at 3 months.
