Joseph Pierre: Dual diagnosis patients, part I

What is the ideal treatment for patients with a "dual diagnosis" of a substance use disorder and another mental illness?

Dr. Lorenzo Norris returns to the MDedge Psychcast this week to discuss treatments for dual diagnosis patients. His guest is Joseph M. Pierre, MD, health sciences clinical professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Pierre recently published an article for MDedge Psychiatry on the real-world challenges in managing these patients.

Dr. Norris and Dr. Pierre discuss ideal treatment compared to real-world treatment. Next week in part II, Dr. Norris and Dr. Pierre dive into addressing malingering and avoiding clinical errors. And Dr. RK joins us to give a talk about, well, words.
