Age, smoking among leading cancer risk factors for SLE patients

Key clinical point: Older age and smoking are two of the top risk factors for cancer in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Major finding: Almost half of the 65 cancers occurred in past or current smokers, including all of the lung cancers.

Study details: An analysis of a multicenter, international cohort of 1,668 newly diagnosed lupus patients.

Disclosures: Two of the study’s authors reported potential conflicts of interest, including receiving grants and consulting and personal fees from various pharmaceutical companies. No other potential conflicts were reported.
