History of smoking gives higher risk for ANCA-associated vasculitis
Key clinical point: Cigarette smoking was significantly associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)–associated vasculitis (AAV), particularly myeloperoxidase-ANCA–positive AAV.
Major finding: Patients with AAV were significantly more likely than non-AAV controls to be former or current smokers (odds ratios, 1.58 and 2.70, respectively).
Study details: The data come from a case-control study of 473 AAV patients and 1,419 matched controls.
Disclosures: The study was supported by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. The researchers had no financial conflicts to disclose.
