JIA arthritis and uveitis flares ‘often run parallel’
Key clinical point: A flare in a child’s arthritis may need to prompt referral for an ophthalmology examination.
Major finding: Children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and uveitis (JIA-U) whose arthritis was flaring at a routine rheumatology assessment had an an almost 2.5-fold increased risk of also having active uveitis 45 days before or after the assessment than children whose arthritis was not flaring at the time they were seen.
Study details: A retrospective, longitudinal cohort study of 98 patients with JIA-U seen at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia over a 6.5-year period (2013-2019).
Disclosures: The study was sponsored by The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Rheumatology Research Fund. The investigators for the study had no financial support from commercial sources or any other potential conflicts of interest.
