Smoking cessation could delay or prevent rheumatoid arthritis

Key clinical point: Smoking cessation significantly reduces the risk and delays the onset of rheumatoid arthritis.

Major finding: Women who quit smoking more than 30 years ago have a 37% lower risk of seropositive rheumatoid arthritis than do those who quit recently.

Study details: Analysis of data from 230,732 women in the Nurses’ Health Study and NHS II.
