Immunization against hepatitis A and B is of great importance for patients with hepatitis C because concomitant infections are damaging to the liver. Vaccination offers the best protection against hepatitis A and B, particularly among high-risk populations, such as homeless individuals and intravenous drug users. A retrospective study of the medical records of 284 veterans who were receiving treatment for addictive disorders found that most patients (88%) who began an accelerated dosing program for hepatitis A and B vaccination received at least the first 3 injections of the series, thus possibly conferring substantial immunity to hepatitis A and B.
