A unified lawsuit has been filed in federal count on behalf of more than 2,000 National Football League players. The suit alleges that the NFL failed to take steps to respond to the neurological risks associated with the sport, according to attorneys representing former players.
"Instead of protecting the health of its players, the NFL's response to this epidemic of brain injuries was to engage in a campaign of deceit and deception, actively concealing the risks players faced from repetitive impacts," said Christopher Seeger and Sol Weiss, attorneys for the players.
Reports on injuries related to "heading" the ball in soccer date back to the 1960's. Regarding American football, at least one review from 1980 states: "Furthermore, proper blocking and tackling techniques must be taught, and such punishing maneuvers as spearing, goring, and butt-blocking and tackling must be eliminated."
