Docs Wary of Retail Clinic Take-Over

As retail clinics expand their range of services, doctors are emphasizing that clinics can't replace a primary care physician. Dr. Rick Kellerman, past president of the American Academy of Family Physicians, noted that improving the primary care workforce helps improve the entire health care system. It remains to be seen hot retail clinics will fit in the landscape of evolving care delivery models such as Accountable Care Organizations, he added. However, insurance representatives voiced support for retail clinics, saying they can help reduce unnecessary emergency department visits and lower costs. Dr. Kellerman addressed the topic at a Washington briefing sponsored by the Alliance for Health Reform and the Kaiser Family Foundation.
