HIV Infection and Lymphoma Survival

Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev; ePub 2016 Oct 18; Han, et al

Better management strategies are needed for patients with HIV/AIDS-associated lymphoma, concluded researchers after conducting a study involving nearly 180,000 individuals.

Participants were diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), Burkitt lymphoma (BL), peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) or follicular lymphoma (FL) during an 8-year period ending in 2011. Investigators analyzed survival trends of those infected and not infected with HIV. Among the results:

  • The prevalence of HIV-infection was 1% for FL, 3% for PTCL, 5% for HL, 5% for DLBCL, and 29% for BL.
  • Patients with HIV infection were at higher risk for poor overall survival, including DLBCL (nearly twice as likely), HL (50% higher odds), BL (46% higher), PTCL (43% higher), and FL (44% higher).
