Outcomes for Two Conditioning Regimens Evaluated

Biol Blood Marrow Transplant; ePub 2017 Jan 17; Ali, et al

Two types of alloHCT conditioning regimens produced similar outcomes in a study involving 71 individuals.

Participants had either acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome. Investigators compared outcomes in patients who received conditioning via either busulfan and fludarabine (BuFlu; n=33) or fludarabine and 400 cGy total body irradiation (FluTBI; n=38). Among the results:

  • Patients receiving BuFlu had more red blood cell transfusions and took longer to achieve platelet recovery.
  • Acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease rates were similar in both groups, as were quality of life measures.
  • 2-year outcomes for relapse, non-relapse mortality, relapse-free survival, and overall survival were also similar in both groups.
