Key clinical point: Women diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) during breast screening have an increased risk of developing breast cancer and of death from breast cancer, compared with the general population.

Major finding: In women with DCIS, the incidence rate of breast cancer was 8.82 per 1,000 women per year, which was more than double that expected from national cancer incidence rates. The rate of breast cancer-related mortality was 1.26 per 1,000 women per year, which was 70% higher than that expected from national breast cancer mortality rates.

Study details: A population-based observational cohort study analyzed the data from 35,024 women in England diagnosed with DCIS by the NHS Breast Screening Programme.
