Mammography screening tied to reduced breast cancer mortality

Key clinical point: Mammography screening programs for breast cancer are associated with a significant reduction in incidence-based breast cancer mortality.

Major finding: Invitation to screening was associated with a 22% reduction in incidence-based breast cancer mortality (relative risk [RR], 0.78; 95% confidence interval, 0.75-0.82). Actual attendance at screening resulted in a mortality decrease of 33% (RR, 0.67; 95% confidence interval, 0.61-0.75).

Study details: Meta-analysis of 27 cohort studies worldwide.

Disclosures: This study was funded by the National Institute for Health Research Policy Research Programme. The authors declared no conflict of interest.
