Survey Reveals Unmet Needs in HCT Survivors

Biol Blood Marrow Transplant; ePub 2017 Aug 4; Hahn, et al

People undergoing either autologous or allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation appear to face unmet emotional health and financial burden needs, according to a survey involving 209 respondents. Investigators used the Survivor Unmet Needs Survey to assess emotional health, access and continuity of care, relationships, financial concerns, and information in participants treated at a single center between 2006 and 2012.

The top 5 unmet needs for patients undergoing autologous HCT patients were:

  • Inability to set future goals/long-term plans.
  • Changes in appearance.
  • Bad memory/lacking focus.
  • Losing confidence in abilities.
  • Paying household or other bills.

For allogeneic HCT patients, the top 5 unmet needs were:

  • Ability to earn money.
  • Pay bills.
  • Feeling tired.
  • Feeling depressed.
  • Dealing with others' expectations of “returning to normal.”

Females’ top needs tended to be from the emotional health domain, whereas males reported financial domain unmet needs. Participation in health and screening tests varied significantly among all respondents.
