Clinicians Should Screen Glioma Patients Preoperatively for Depression
Key clinical point: Depression can affect subjective retrospective memory in glioma patients, and clinicians should screen preoperatively to identify those at high risk in an effort to provide emotional interventions and memory training.
Major finding: Depression within 48 hours of hospitalization for glioma predicted overall memory impairment and subjective retrospective memory impairment 2 weeks after surgery. A telephone intervention is effective, and it might prove a useful treatment option for older adults with depression and CHD who prefer non-pharmacological and in-person interventions.
Study details: The data come from a prospective, multicenter study including 71 adults with glioma who were assessed for depression, subjective prospective memory, and subjective retrospective memory.
Disclosures: The researchers disclosed no financial conflicts. The study was supported by department of science and technology of Shandong Province in China.
