Genomic study reveals five subtypes of colorectal cancer

Key clinical point: Colorectal cancer can be divided into five DNA methylation subtypes that predict molecular and clinical behavior and may offer future therapeutic targets.

Major finding: The mean age of patients with CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP)–high colorectal cancer was 75.2 years, compared with 61.9 years for patients with CIMP-negative disease (P less than .0001).

Study details: A genomic study involving 216 unselected colorectal cancers.

Disclosures: The study was funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, Pathology Queensland, and others. The investigators disclosed no conflicts of interest.
