Opioid-free regimen after neck dissection keeps patients comfortable

Key clinical point: A multimodal, opioid-free regimen is effective in patients with thyroid cancer who undergo lateral neck dissections.

Major finding: Before a shift in opioid-prescribing practices, patients went home with a mean 295.4 mean morphine equivalents; after the shift, they received 85.89 MME at discharge (effect size, 1.08).

Study details: Retrospective chart review of 243 patients with thyroid cancer who received lateral neck dissections between 2012 and mid-2019.

Disclosures: Dr. Lim reported no outside sources of funding. He, Dr. Shindo, and a third author reported that they had no conflicts of interest.
