Solid Predominant Subtype in LC

How does it affect postrecurrence survival?

Solid predominant subtype is an independent predictor of early recurrence and, among those patients who recur, of worse postrecurrence survival (PRS), according to a study of 1,120 patients with stage I lung adenocarcinoma who underwent complete surgical resection. Researchers found:

• Of 1,120 patients, 188 had recurrent disease, 103 of whom died of lung cancer.

• Among patients who recurred, 2-year PRS was 45%, with median PRS of 26.1 months.

• Compared with patients with nonsolid tumors, patients with solid predominant tumors had recurrences that were earlier, more extrathoracic, and more multsite.

• Among patients who recurred, a worse PRS was associated with solid predominant histologic pattern in the primary tumor, age > 65 years, and sublobar resection.

• Also significantly associated with worse PRS were extrathoracic metastasis and age > 65 years at recurrence.
