Teledermoscopy using smartphones fails to boost skin cancer detection

Key clinical point: Mobile teledermoscopy did not improve detection of suspicious skin lesions.

Major finding: Sensitivity for suspected skin cancers or precursor lesions was not better with mobile dermoscopy–enhanced skin self-exams versus naked-eye skin self-exams at the lesion level (75% vs. 88%; P = .04) or the patient level (87% vs. 97%; P = .26).

Study details: A randomized, controlled trial of 234 adults at high risk for skin cancer.

Disclosures: The trial was funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council. The authors disclosed relationships with e-derm-consult, SciBase, Canfield Scientific, and other companies.
