Associations with discordant cancers
All the associations of multiple myeloma (MM) with discordant cancers are novel, suggesting that MM shares genetic susceptibility with many cancers, according to a study of 24,137 patients with MM. Researchers found:
• MM was reliably associated with relative’s colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers, nonthyroid endocrine tumors, leukemia, and cancer of unknown primary.
• MM was also associated with subsites of bone and connective tissue tumors and of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, including lymphoplamacytic lymphoma/Waldenstrӧm macroglobulinema.
• MM had a strong association in colorectal cancer families, perhaps as part of an unidentified syndrome.
