Hospital-onset sepsis twice as lethal as community-onset disease

Key clinical point: For hospitalized patients, hospital-onset sepsis appears to be much more deadly than community-onset sepsis.

Major finding: Patients with hospital-onset sepsis were more likely to die than those with community-onset sepsis (odds ratio, 2.1).

Study details: A retrospective study of 2.2 million patients treated at 136 hospitals from 2009 to 2015.
