Diabetes Patients on Insulin Therapy Face Greatest Depression Risk

Key clinical point: Patients with diabetes who smoke are almost seven times more likely to have mild, moderate depression (odds ratio, 6.72; 95% confidence interval, 1.26-35.70; P = 0.025) than patients with diabetes who do not smoke. Patients on insulin therapy are almost twice as likely to have mild, moderate depression (OR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.12-2.82; P = 0.015), compared with patients on other treatments.

Major finding: About 87% of patients with diabetes had depression, based on results of the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire.

Study details: The results are based on a cross-sectional study 353 adult participants.
