Red meat intake linked to increased risk of fatal CHD in men
Key clinical point: Even partial replacement of red meat with healthy, plant-based sources of protein could substantially reduce rates of coronary heart disease in the United States.
Major finding: Substituting one serving per day of red or processed red meat with foods such as nuts, legumes, whole grains, or dairy was associated with up to a 47% lower risk of having coronary heart disease in men.
Study details: A prospective evaluation of 43,259 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2012).
