HOME-PE trial clarifies which pulmonary embolism patients to treat at home

Key clinical point: Nearly 40% of hemodynamically stable patients with acute pulmonary embolism can be managed at home using either the simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index score or the Hestia rule.

Major finding: The 30-day rate of the composite endpoint of recurrent venous thromboembolism, major bleeding, or death, occurred in 1.3% of acute pulmonary embolism patients managed at home based on the Hestia rule and 1.1% using the simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index score.

Study details: HOME-PE was a randomized, open-label trial including 1,974 hemodynamically stable patients with acute pulmonary embolism assigned to outpatient therapy with the aid of either the Hestia rule or the simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index score.

Disclosures: The presenter reported receiving research grants to conduct HOME-PE from the French Ministry of Health, the study sponsor.
