Breast density asymmetry might increase breast cancer risk

Key clinical point: There was a trend toward a greater risk of breast cancer with higher degrees of breast density asymmetry (BDA) among women undergoing image-guided breast biopsies.

Major finding: The trend for higher risk of in situ or invasive cancer with increasing BDA was observed in a perilesional analysis, with an odds ratio of 1.59 (95% CI 0.94-2.69) for women in the highest quartile of BDA versus those in the lowest quartile (P = .067)

Study details: Review of prebiopsy mammograms from 854 women.

Disclosures: The National Cancer Institute funded the research. Dr. Mullooly reported no relevant disclosures.
