New Prognostic Tool for Critically Ill Allo-SCT Patients

Biol Blood Marrow Transplant; ePub 2017 Mar 4; Bayraktar, et al

A new prognostic index for intensive care after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) accurately predicted mortality in a study involving 656 individuals.

Investigators developed a prognostic index for critically ill allo-SCT patients. They used the tool in patients admitted to the MD Anderson Cancer Center ICU between 2001 and 2010. Among the results:

  • The new index outperformed both the APACHE II and SOFA scoring systems.
  • Hospital mortality using the new tool was 31% in patients with a 0-2 score; in those with scores >2-4 and >4 it was 69% and 91%, respectively.
  • Median overall survival in these groups were 7.59, 0.67, and 0.30 months, respectively.
