Depression in Young Patients With Diabetes
Why regular screening and referral is needed
Depressive symptoms are more frequent than diagnosed depression in youths with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, according to results from the Children’s Depression Inventory 2 Self-Report completed by 600 young people with diabetes.
Patients were between 10 and 17 years of age; 261 had type 1 diabetes and 339 had type 2 diabetes.
Among the findings:
• Depression symptoms were seen in 13% of type 1 and 22% of type 2 diabetes patients.
• Of these, only 4% of type 1 and 9% of type 2 diabetes were treated for depression within the prior 12 months.
• Depressive symptoms were associated with lower family income and obesity in type 1 diabetes patients.
Investigators noted the need for regular depression screening and referral for young people with diabetes.
