Testosterone Imbalance May Link Depression, Increased Body Weight in Premenopause
Key clinical point: Higher levels of free testosterone might affect depression in overweight premenopausal women.
Major finding: Overweight premenopausal women had a significantly higher prevalence of depressive symptoms than normal weight premenopausal women (10.5% vs. 6.6%, odds ratio 1.65), and premenopausal women with depressive symptoms had higher levels of free testosterone than those who were not depressed.
Study details: The data come from 3,124 adult women who were part of a population-based cohort study.
Disclosures: The researchers reported no financial conflicts. The study was supported by the Leipzig Research Centre for Civilisation Diseases (LIFE), University of Leipzig, Germany.
