Women with CHD Experience More Severe Depression Than Men

Key clinical point: Women with comorbid coronary heart disease (CHD) and depression have a greater health burden than their male counterparts.

Major finding: Among patients with CHD and depression, female gender is tied to higher more comorbidities, including PTSD.

Study details: Cross-sectional study of 1,022 patients (750 men, 272 women) aged 30-80 whose depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Cardiac Depression Scale (CDS), a 26-item questionnaire that is used to assess depression in patients with cardiovascular disease. A larger percentage of severe depressive symptoms was found in women, compared with men (61.4% vs. 50.7%; P = 0.003).
