Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia

Can CBT-I help patients with psychiatric conditions?

Insomnia symptoms and sleep parameters for patients with comorbid (CBT) insomnia can be improved with cognitive behavioral therapy, according to a meta-analysis of 37 studies that also examined the relationship to psychiatric and medical conditions. Researchers found:

• A small to medium positive effect was found across comorbid outcomes using CBT-I.

• Larger effects were on psychiatric conditions compared with medical conditions.

• 36% of patients who received CBT-I were in remission from insomnia at post-treatment evaluation compared with 16.9% in comparison conditions.
