Maternal depression may derail children’s school readiness

Key clinical point: Maternal depression in early childhood can negatively impact a child’s school readiness.

Major finding: Children exposed to maternal depression in early childhood were 1.17 times more likely than were unexposed children to show developmental vulnerability at kindergarten entry.

Study details: The data come from a population-based cohort study of 52,103 children born in Manitoba, Canada, who were assessed for early development between 2005 and 2016.
