Identifying Women with Unhealthy Alcohol Use
Am J Addictions; ePub 2018 Feb 28; Hoggatt, et al
Gender-tailored binge-drinking questions may improve detection of women's unhealthy alcohol use, a recent study found. Among 1,349 women veterans, researchers calculated the proportion screening positive for unhealthy alcohol use with non-tailored vs gender-tailored criteria (a gender-tailored binge-drinking item, lower screen-positive threshold, or both). They found:
- 3% more women screened positive with a modified binge-drinking question, most reporting risky drinking.
- 15% more women screened positive with a lower threshold; most did not report risky drinking.
