New IOM report details psychosocial interventions
A new Institute of Medicine (IOM) report identifies key steps to help ensure high-quality care to individuals receiving mental health and substance use services. The report, entitled Psychosocial Interventions for Mental and Substance Use Disorders, provides a framework for establishing evidence-based standards for use in everyday care with the goal of improving outcomes of psychosocial interventions for those with mental health and substance use disorders. Framework highlights include the need to:
• Support research to strengthen the evidence base on the efficacy of psychosocial interventions.
• Identify the key elements that lead to improved health outcomes.
• Establish methods for successfully implementing, sustaining, and improving psychosocial interventions in regular practice.
