Key clinical point: Exposure to opioids in utero was significantly associated with poor outcomes, including small for gestational age and preterm birth, and later behavioral and development problems in young children.

Major finding: Maternal opioid exposure was associated with small for gestational age (OR 1.87) and preterm birth (OR 1.49). School-aged children with prenatal opioid exposure had an increased risk of ADHD (OR 2.55).
