Family-focused therapy linked to longer remissions in youth at risk for bipolar disorder

Key clinical point: Family-focused therapy was more effective than standard approaches in delaying new mood episodes in young people.

Major finding: Family-focused therapy–treated youth saw 81 weeks from randomization to onset of a new episode, compared with 63 for the control group (P = .03).

Study details: A multisite clinical trial with 127 subjects randomized to 12 sessions of family-focused therapy or 6 sessions of family and individual therapy and followed for 2 years.
